When Heather Scott started working in oil and gas engineering in the 1980s, she heard more than once that women didn’t belong in the field. But she didn’t listen. Instead, she went on to build a successful 35-year career and spent a lot of time helping younger women — and men — grow in the field.
Heather is currently CEO and an owner of Nexxa Industries Ltd, applying her extensive experience to a different industry – manufacturing. Nexxa is a precision machine shop that specializes in CNC turning, milling, waterjet and engraving services to a range of customers across multiple industries and consumer goods. She is leading a strategic growth initiative to expand Nexxa’s customer base and manufactured products.
Previously, Heather has held Executive and Senior Management positions at PetroChina Canada/Brion Energy, Suncor and Petro-Canada. Her roles encompassed all aspects of the upstream oil and gas value chain from the fundamental engineering to project development, commodity marketing, strategic planning, operations, technology as well as Executive responsibility for the business P&L.
As for her passions - Heather has driven safety, environmental performance, stakeholder engagement and technology development as critical elements of sustainable and responsible business. In addition, she has been involved in many organizations that encourage girls to pursue STEM careers.
Heather is registered as a Professional Engineer with APEGA, and previously held a number of Director/Executive/Advisory roles with Insitu Oil Sands Alliance (IOSA), Canadian Heavy Oil Association (CHOA), Canadian Association Petroleum Producers’ (CAPP) Executive Policy Groups, CanWest Gas Supply and the Association of Women Engineers. She attended John Abbott CEGEP in Montreal, and then obtained her Bachelor of Applied Science degree majoring in chemical engineering from the University of Waterloo. Heather relocated to Calgary for work and is happily married with two fantastic daughters.
